Best South Indian Filter Coffee Powder: How to Choose
The Kaapiswada family · 2026-10-24
The best South Indian filter coffee powder is the one that matches how you drink your kaapi: a coffee-chicory blend such as 80:20 for a thick, dark, milky cup, or 100% Arabica for a cleaner cup with less milk. Beyond the blend, look at the grind, how recently it was roasted and ground, and where the beans come from.
We grow coffee on our own family estate in Chikmagalur, so these are the checks we use ourselves when we choose powder for our own kitchen.
Start with the blend
Most South Indian filter coffee powder falls into two groups.
- Coffee with chicory (80:20): 80% coffee and 20% roasted chicory. The decoction is thick, dark and slightly bittersweet, and it stands up to plenty of hot milk.
- Pure coffee, no chicory: only coffee. The decoction is lighter and clearer, and the coffee's own aroma comes through.
If you want the classic hotel-style kaapi, try an 80:20 blend (like Kaapiswada Swadamalnad: our 80:20 filter coffee made with single-estate Arabica from our own family estate in Chikmagalur). If you prefer to taste the coffee itself, choose pure Arabica (like Kaapiswada Pureswada: 100% single-estate Arabica, no chicory).

South Indian filter coffee powder with chicory at a glance
If you are choosing filter coffee powder with chicory, these are the facts worth reading on any pack. This is how our own 80:20 blend, Swadamalnad, reads:
- Blend: 80% roasted Arabica coffee, 20% roasted chicory.
- Roast: medium-dark, which suits a thick decoction with hot milk.
- Grind: fine, made for a steel filter.
- Pack: 250 g, best before 6 months from the date of packing.
- Origin: our own 100-acre family estate in the Mullayanagiri foothills of Chikmagalur.
A pack that names its ratio, its roast, its grind and its origin is easy to trust. One that leaves these out is harder to judge.
Check the grind
A steel filter needs a fine grind, a little finer than for a pour-over and coarser than espresso. Too coarse and the decoction turns thin. Too fine and the filter clogs and drips for an hour.
Good filter powder feels like fine sand with a few slightly larger grains. If you are unsure, read the right grind size for South Indian filter coffee.
Look for freshness
Coffee loses aroma quickly once it is ground. When you buy filter coffee powder:
- Prefer small packs (250 g is easy to finish) over a large pack that sits open for weeks. Not sure how long a pack lasts? See how many cups a 250 g pack makes.
- Check the roast and pack date, not only the expiry.
- Once opened, keep it airtight, away from heat and moisture.
Our tips for this are in how to store filter coffee powder.
Know where the coffee comes from
Powder from a single estate tells you more than a mix of many farms. A single origin means the same hills, shade and processing in every pack, so your kaapi tastes the same each time.
Our coffee grows in the Mullayanagiri foothills of Chikmagalur, on a 100-acre family estate with more than 50 years of experience behind it. If you like to grind at home, you can also choose whole beans (like Kaapiswada Roastswada: whole Arabica beans from our own Chikmagalur estate).
A quick buyer's checklist
- Do I want chicory in my kaapi, or pure coffee?
- Is the grind fine enough for a steel filter?
- Is it freshly packed, in a size I will finish soon?
- Does the pack say where the coffee is grown?
Once you have chosen, the step-by-step method to make South Indian filter coffee at home takes about twenty minutes. You can see all our coffees on the products page.
Questions people ask
Which is the best South Indian filter coffee powder to buy?
There is no single best. For a thick, dark, milky cup choose a coffee-chicory blend like 80:20. For a cleaner cup with less milk choose 100% Arabica. Freshness and grind matter as much as the blend.
Is filter coffee powder with chicory better than without?
Neither is better; they taste different. Chicory adds body and a deeper colour. Pure coffee tastes lighter and shows more of the coffee itself. Our guide on filter coffee with or without chicory explains how to pick.
What does 80:20 mean on a filter coffee pack?
It means 80% coffee and 20% chicory. Read more in what the 80:20 ratio means.
How much filter coffee powder should I use per cup?
Two to three heaped tablespoons in the filter usually make enough decoction for two to three cups. See how much coffee powder to use.
What should I check on a pack of filter coffee powder with chicory?
Look for the exact ratio (such as 80:20), the roast level, a grind meant for a steel filter, the pack or roast date and the place the coffee is grown. These five lines tell you most of what you need before you buy.
