Is Filter Coffee Without Chicory Good or Bad?
The Kaapiswada family · 2026-10-13
Filter coffee without chicory is not bad, and it is not "better" either: it is a different style. You get a lighter, cleaner decoction that tastes more of the coffee itself, but with less body than a chicory blend, so it can taste thin if you drown it in milk. Brew it with a little more powder and a little less milk and it makes an excellent cup.
We make both kinds from Arabica grown on our own estate in the Mullayanagiri foothills of Chikmagalur, so we can tell you honestly what each one does. Our coffee without chicory is Pureswada, 100% Arabica filter coffee powder.
What changes when there is no chicory
- Colour. The decoction is browner and lighter, not near-black.
- Body. It feels lighter. Chicory adds thickness, so without it the decoction is thinner.
- Taste. More of the coffee's own flavour, with less of the roasted-root bitterness many people associate with filter kaapi.
- Milk. Because the body is lighter, it can taste weak in a tumbler of mostly milk.
When filter coffee without chicory is a good choice
- You want to taste the coffee, not a blend.
- You drink your kaapi with less milk, or darker.
- You are curious about where your coffee comes from. A 100% Arabica pack lets the estate speak.
When a chicory blend may suit you better
If your kaapi is mostly hot milk, roughly one part decoction to three parts milk, and you love a thick, dark, bittersweet cup, a blend like our 80:20 Swadamalnad is made for that. We compare the two in 80:20 filter coffee vs 100% Arabica.
How to brew filter coffee without chicory
- Use a little more powder. Start with about half a tablespoon more than you would use with a blend, on top of the usual two to three heaped tablespoons.
- Use water just off the boil. Water that is too cool makes a weak decoction.
- Do not press the disc down. Let the water pass through slowly, over 15 to 20 minutes.
- Mix to taste. Try a little more decoction than you would use with a blend, and pour it between davara and tumbler for the froth.

What to check on the pack
A pack should say clearly what is inside. Look for the coffee-to-chicory ratio, or "100% Arabica, no chicory". Ours state it plainly: Pureswada is 100% Arabica with no chicory, and Swadamalnad is 80% Arabica and 20% chicory.
Questions people ask
Is filter coffee without chicory pure coffee? Yes, if the pack says 100% coffee. Pureswada is 100% Arabica, with nothing else in the pack.
Why does my decoction look lighter without chicory? Chicory adds colour and body, so a pure coffee decoction is naturally lighter and browner even when it is brewed well. See our guide to fixing a weak decoction if it also tastes thin.
Can I mix pure coffee with a chicory blend? Yes. Some homes keep one of each and choose by mood, or mix them to adjust the thickness. Both come in 250 g packs on our coffee page.
