Chikmagalur Estate Coffee: What Makes It Different

The Kaapiswada family · 2026-10-13

Chikmagalur estate coffee is coffee grown on one estate in the Chikmagalur hills of Karnataka and packed from that estate's own harvest, rather than gathered from many places and blended. Ours is grown on our own 100-acre estate in the Mullayanagiri foothills, in the Western Ghats, by a family with more than fifty years of experience in growing and sourcing coffee.

Where our coffee comes from

Our roots are in the Malnad region of Chikmagalur, in the foothills of Mullayanagiri. On a hundred acres of our own land, growing coffee is part of everyday life. It is the place behind every Kaapiswada pack.

Exactly where the estate is

Our estate, Varalakshmi Estate, is near Hirekolale Lake, Chikmagalur 577101, in the Mullayanagiri foothills. Its coordinates are 13°21'36.3"N 75°41'53.7"E. Terrain data for these coordinates puts the land at about 1,240 metres above sea level.

Arabica, grown under shade, with no middlemen

The coffee we grow is Arabica, grown under shade, on land our family has known for over fifty years. Because we grow it ourselves, there are no middlemen and no borrowed beans between the estate and your pack.

From estate to your steel filter

Growing, sourcing, grading, roasting, grinding and packing are all done with the same attention. Every batch is qualified before it is roasted, because a blend is only as honest as the batch behind it. We pack in small runs so the kaapi that reaches your filter smells like the hill it came from.

What this means for the coffee you buy

  • Pureswada: 100% Arabica filter coffee powder, no chicory.
  • Swadamalnad: 80% Arabica and 20% chicory, the classic filter kaapi blend.
  • Roastswada: 100% Arabica whole beans for those who grind their own.

Each is a 250 g pack, and you can see all three on our coffee page. Read more about the family and the estate on our story page.
