What Is Kaapiswada? Estate-Grown Filter Kaapi

The Kaapiswada family · 2026-10-28

Kaapiswada is a South Indian filter coffee brand from our family's own 100-acre estate in the Mullayanagiri foothills of Chikmagalur, Karnataka. The name joins two Kannada words: kaapi, which is coffee, and swada, which is taste. We grow the coffee, we roast it, and we send it to kitchens across India from kaapiswada.in.

That is the short answer. The longer one is about a family, a hillside and a cup of filter kaapi made the way we drink it at home.

What is Kaapiswada, in a little more detail?

Our family has been growing and sourcing coffee for more than fifty years. Kaapiswada is how we share that coffee directly, estate to cup, with people who want their morning decoction to taste the way it should.

The coffee is grown on Varalakshmi Estate, near Hirekolale Lake in the Mullayanagiri foothills. This is Malnad country, in the Western Ghats: misty mornings, shade trees over the coffee, red soil, and a long monsoon that the plants wait for every year.

Because the family that grows the coffee is the family that sells it, we can tell you where each pack began. That is not a small thing when you are choosing something you will drink every day.

The three coffees we make

We keep the range small, on purpose. Each one is a 250 g pack, and each suits a different kind of drinker.

  • Swadamalnad is our classic filter coffee blend: 80% Arabica from our estate and 20% roasted chicory root. It gives the dark, thick decoction that stands up to plenty of hot milk. If you grew up on filter kaapi, this is the one that will feel like home. Read more about Swadamalnad filter coffee.
  • Pureswada is 100% Arabica filter coffee with no chicory. It is a cleaner, more aromatic cup for people who want only coffee in the filter.
  • Roastswada is 100% Arabica whole beans, for those who like to grind just before they brew, whether in a steel filter, a French press, a moka pot or a pour-over.

What does 80:20 mean?

On a filter coffee pack, 80:20 means 80 parts coffee and 20 parts chicory. In Swadamalnad the 80 parts are Arabica from our own estate, and the 20 parts are roasted chicory root.

Chicory has long been part of South Indian filter kaapi. It rounds out the cup and deepens the colour of the decoction. If you would rather taste only the coffee, Pureswada is made without it.

How we brew Kaapiswada at home

You do not need anything fancy. A steel filter, a kettle and a little patience are enough.

  1. Put two to three tablespoons of filter coffee powder in the top chamber of the filter.
  2. Set the pressing disc on top, gently. Do not push it down hard.
  3. Pour in just-boiled water and cover the filter.
  4. Let the decoction drip for fifteen to twenty minutes. Do not hurry it.
  5. Mix a little decoction into hot, full-cream milk and sweeten the way your house likes it.

The unhurried drip is part of the pleasure. It is the five quiet minutes before the day begins.
