Roasted Coffee Beans: What They Are and How to Use Them
The Kaapiswada family · 2026-10-23
Roasted coffee beans are the seeds of the coffee cherry, dried and then heated until they turn brown, crackle and develop the aroma we know as coffee. You buy them whole, grind them fresh and brew them in a filter, press or pot.
We grow Arabica on our own estate in the Mullayanagiri foothills of Chikmagalur. Here is what happens between the cherry and the roasted coffee beans in your pack, and how to use them well at home. If you would like to start with whole beans, see our Roastswada, 100% Arabica from our own estate.
Roasted coffee beans at a glance
- What they are: coffee seeds, dried and then heated until brown and aromatic.
- Best form: whole, ground just before brewing.
- Roast to start with: medium, then move lighter or darker to taste.
- Check the pack for: 100% Arabica, a named estate or region, and a roast date.
- Store: airtight, cool, dark and dry.
What are roasted coffee beans?
A coffee cherry holds two seeds. After the cherries are picked, the seeds are separated from the fruit, dried and sold as green coffee. Green beans are pale, hard and grassy, and they make a poor drink. Roasting turns them into the coffee you know: the beans lose moisture, darken, swell a little and develop hundreds of aroma and flavour compounds.
How roasting changes roasted coffee beans
The roast level is how far the beans are taken.
- Light roast: pale brown, brighter and more aromatic, with more of the bean's own character.
- Medium roast: richer brown, balanced and smooth. This suits almost every method, from a steel filter to a French press.
- Dark roast: deep brown, bolder and more bitter-sweet, the style many South Indian homes expect from filter kaapi.
Roast level is a matter of taste, not a ranking. Our guide on medium or dark roast for South Indian filter coffee helps you choose.
How to buy roasted coffee beans
- Check the bean type. For a smooth, clear cup choose 100% Arabica. See what the 100% Arabica label means.
- Check the origin. A named estate or region is easier to trust than a generic "India".
- Check freshness. Look for a roast date, and for a strong sweet smell when you open the pack. See how to tell freshly roasted coffee beans.
- Pick the roast you like. If unsure, start with medium.
- Buy whole beans if you can grind. They keep their aroma longer than ground coffee.
If you want to start with a pack, see our Roastswada whole Arabica beans (like Kaapiswada Roastswada: whole Arabica beans from our own Chikmagalur estate, medium roast, in a 250 g pack).
How to use roasted coffee beans at home
Grind just before you brew, and match the grind to the method:
- South Indian steel filter: fine, like rava with a little powder.
- Pour-over: medium.
- French press and cold brew: coarse. See cold brew with whole Arabica.
You do not need an expensive grinder to begin; a mixie in short pulses is enough for a steel filter. Our guide to brewing whole Arabica coffee beans at home has the full steps for each method, and our filter coffee guide covers kaapi with milk.
How to store roasted coffee beans
Keep them in an airtight container, in a cool, dark, dry cupboard, and use a dry spoon. Avoid the fridge and avoid grinding a week's worth at once.
If you want to try it, see our Roastswada whole Arabica beans, or look at every coffee on the products page. Step-by-step recipes are in how to brew whole Arabica coffee beans at home.

Can I eat roasted coffee beans? Roasted beans are sold for brewing, and we sell ours that way. We would use them for brewing rather than as a snack.
How do I use roasted coffee beans without a grinder? Use a mixie in short pulses, stopping before it turns to powder. It works for a steel filter; for a French press, pulse less for a coarser grind.
Which roast is best for filter coffee? Medium to medium-dark suits a South Indian steel filter. Pick the one whose taste you like; both are good.
Are roasted coffee beans the same as ground coffee? It is the same coffee in a different form. Whole roasted beans keep aroma longer and let you choose the grind.

Which roasted coffee beans should I buy first? Choose 100% Arabica whole beans from a named estate, in a small pack and a medium roast. Our Roastswada is made for exactly that first purchase, and the label guide explains what 100% Arabica means.
