Coffee guide / Powder per cup
How much coffee powder per cup?
A starting point is easy to remember, and then you adjust to your taste. Here are the numbers for a steel filter and for a 250 g pack.
In the cup: Swadamalnad and Pureswada both come in 250 g packs. Weigh your own spoon once and you will know your own numbers.
How to make it
Starting points (Keep this table)
- Start here. About one heaped tablespoon of powder for every 100 ml of hot water in the filter.
- Four-cup filter. Two to three heaped tablespoons in the top cup is the usual fill.
- Taste and adjust. Thin? Add half a tablespoon more next time. Too strong or bitter? Use a little less.
- Weigh once. A heaped tablespoon of ground coffee is roughly 8 to 10 g. Weigh your own spoon to know your number.
| Starting point | |
|---|---|
| Per 100 ml of water | About 1 heaped tablespoon |
| Regular four-cup steel filter | 2–3 heaped tablespoons (about 16–30 g) |
| One 250 g pack | Roughly nine to fourteen fills of a four-cup filter |
| Decoction : milk | About 1 : 3 for classic milky kaapi |
What you need
- Kitchen scale (0.1 g) (nice to have): Weigh coffee and water, so the cup tastes the same every day.
- South Indian steel filter (you probably have this): Two stacked cups with a pressing disc: it drips a thick decoction slowly. The classic way to make filter kaapi.
- Airtight coffee jar (nice to have): Keeps air, light and damp away from your coffee between brews.
We are planning to stock this equipment; it is not on sale yet.
Which Kaapiswada coffee to buy
Swadamalnad (80% Arabica · 20% Chicory, 250 g): The everyday 80:20 blend for milky filter kaapi, in a 250 g pack.
Also works: Pureswada (100% Arabica · No chicory). Prefer a cleaner cup? Pureswada is 100% Arabica with no chicory. Use about half a tablespoon more powder.
Tips
- A bigger filter, a stronger decoction or less milk all use more powder, so a pack lasts fewer days.
- Stale powder brews thin and makes you add more. Keep it sealed.
