Coffee guide / Moka pot
Moka pot coffee, and an americano-style cup
A moka pot makes strong, small coffee on the stove. Add hot water and you have an americano-style long cup. (A true americano uses an espresso machine, which this is not.)
In the cup: Strong and full, without milk. Diluted with hot water it becomes a long black cup.
How to make it
Moka pot (About 8 minutes)
- Fill the base. Put hot water in the bottom, up to the valve line.
- Add coffee. Fill the basket with coffee. Level it but do not press it down.
- Heat gently. Close the pot and put it on a low flame with the lid open.
- Stop at the hiss. When it starts to gurgle and the stream turns pale, take it off the heat.
- Make it long. For an americano-style cup, add hot water: start with equal parts coffee and water.
| Starting point | |
|---|---|
| Coffee | Fill the basket, level, no pressing |
| Water | Hot water up to the valve line |
| Grind | Fine to medium-fine (finer than a pour-over) |
| Heat | Low flame |
| Long cup | 1 part coffee to 1 part hot water, then adjust |
What you need
- Moka pot (you will need this): A stovetop pot that pushes hot water up through the coffee. Strong, small cups.
- Hand coffee grinder (nice to have): Grind beans fresh for each brew and pick the grind for the method.
- Kitchen scale (0.1 g) (nice to have): Weigh coffee and water, so the cup tastes the same every day.
We are planning to stock this equipment; it is not on sale yet.
Which Kaapiswada coffee to buy
Roastswada (100% Arabica · Whole beans, 250 g): A moka pot likes a medium-fine grind you set yourself, so whole beans give you control and the freshest cup.
Also works: Pureswada (100% Arabica · No chicory). No grinder? Our fine filter grind is the closest ready-ground option. Pack it lightly, and stop the brew early if it tastes harsh.
Tips
- Take the pot off the heat early to avoid bitterness.
- Cool the base under a tap when it is done to stop the brew.
