Whole Beans vs Ground Coffee: Storage and Grinding
The Kaapiswada family · 2026-10-21
In the whole beans vs ground coffee question, whole beans keep their aroma longer because less of the coffee is exposed to air. Store them airtight, away from light and heat, and grind just before you brew.
Ground coffee is still a good choice for many kitchens, because it is ready to use. Here is how we decide between the two at home, and how we store and grind.
Whole beans vs ground coffee, in short
- Whole beans: keep their aroma longer, and you choose the grind each time. You need a grinder, or a mixie.
- Ground coffee: ready to brew, with no extra step. The aroma fades faster once the pack is open.
If you drink filter kaapi every morning, ready-ground powder is the easy route. If you like to open a pack and smell the coffee before you brew, whole beans are worth it.
Why whole beans keep better
When coffee is ground, far more of it touches the air. Air, heat and moisture are what take away the aroma, so ground coffee loses it faster than whole beans do. If you want to try whole beans, our Roastswada is made for that (like Kaapiswada Roastswada: 100% Arabica whole beans from our own Chikmagalur estate).
This is why many people grind a small amount at a time. You get the aroma of freshly ground coffee, and the rest of the beans stay protected until you need them.
How to store whole beans
- Use an airtight container. A steel dabba with a tight lid works well.
- Keep it away from light and heat. A cupboard away from the stove is good.
- Keep moisture out. Always use a dry spoon.
- Buy what you will finish. A 250 g pack is a sensible size to start with.
We cover the same habits for powder in our post on how to store filter coffee powder.
Grind size for South Indian filter kaapi
For a steel filter, grind fine, like fine rava with a little powder in it. Too coarse and the water runs through too fast, giving a thin decoction. Too fine and it can clog the filter and drip very slowly.
If your decoction is weak, grind a little finer or use a little more coffee. Our post on how to fix a weak filter coffee decoction goes through the steps, and the one on how much coffee powder to use covers quantity.
No grinder? Options
- A mixie: grind in short pulses, a few seconds at a time, and let it rest between pulses so the beans do not heat up. Check the grind after each pulse.
- A hand grinder: gives the most even result, and it is quiet.
- Ready-ground coffee: if grinding is a hassle, ground coffee is a perfectly good choice.
Grind only what you need for one brew, and keep the rest of the beans whole.
Which should you buy?
Choose whole beans if you like the ritual and have a way to grind. Choose ground if you want to skip a step. Whole beans also make good cold brew.
For whole beans, we make Roastswada (like Kaapiswada Roastswada: 100% Arabica whole beans from our own Chikmagalur estate). For ground coffee, we make Pureswada, which is 100% Arabica, and Swadamalnad, our 80% Arabica and 20% chicory filter blend. All three come in 250 g packs on our coffee page.
If you want to try it, see our Roastswada whole Arabica beans, or our 100% Arabica ground Pureswada.

Questions people ask
How long do whole beans last? They keep their aroma longer than ground coffee. Stored airtight, away from light, heat and moisture, they stay good for a good while. Grind only what you need for each brew.
Can I freeze coffee beans? Some people do, but moisture is the risk. We keep ours in an airtight container in a cool cupboard and buy small packs instead.
Can I grind coffee beans in a mixie? Yes. Use short pulses, rest between them, and check the grind. It should look like fine rava with a little powder for a steel filter.
What grind should I use for a filter? Fine, like fine rava with a little powder. Adjust slightly if your decoction drips too fast or too slowly.
Is ground coffee bad? No. It is convenient, and many families use it every day. It simply loses its aroma faster once opened, so keep it airtight.
