Coffee guide / Arabica vs Robusta
Arabica or Robusta for filter coffee?
These are the two main coffee species. Here is how they differ in the cup, and how our coffees are made.
In the cup: Kaapiswada coffee is Arabica, grown on our own estate in Chikmagalur. Swadamalnad adds 20% chicory; Pureswada and Roastswada are 100% Arabica.
How to make it
How to choose (Read the table)
- Think of the cup you like. A smoother, more aromatic cup, or a heavier, bolder one?
- Check the label. “100% Arabica” means every bean in the pack is Arabica. A blend should say what else is in it.
- Try it your way. Brew it in your steel filter and taste it with and without milk.
| Arabica | Robusta | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cup | Smoother, more aromatic | Heavier, bolder, more bitter |
| In South Indian filter coffee | Often the main coffee in the blend | Sometimes blended in for body |
| Kaapiswada | All our coffee is Arabica | We do not use it |
What you need
- South Indian steel filter (you probably have this): Two stacked cups with a pressing disc: it drips a thick decoction slowly. The classic way to make filter kaapi.
- Davara and tumbler (nice to have): For pouring the kaapi back and forth, which cools it and builds the froth.
We are planning to stock this equipment; it is not on sale yet.
Which Kaapiswada coffee to buy
Pureswada (100% Arabica · No chicory, 250 g): Pureswada is 100% Arabica from our own estate, with no chicory: the cleanest way to taste Arabica.
Also works: Swadamalnad (80% Arabica · 20% Chicory). Swadamalnad is 80% Arabica and 20% chicory, for the thick, bittersweet decoction many South Indian homes love with milk.
Tips
- Chicory is not Robusta. It is a roasted root, blended for body and colour.
- Ask any brand what is in the pack. A good one will tell you plainly.
